Why We Started Sol.Spec

This blog has been a long time coming.

A lot of you have asked about the story behind Sol.Spec, not just what we do, but why we started in the first place. So we thought we’d finally sit down and share it properly.

Sol.Spec started with a pretty simple thought: sunglasses should be part of your everyday life. Not something you only reach for on special occasions or when everything is perfectly put together, but something you can throw on without thinking twice and still feel good in.

At the same time, we knew we wanted to build this for South Africans.

There’s so much personality in the way people dress here. It’s expressive, it’s confident, and it’s always evolving. But when it came to eyewear, it felt like there was room for something different. Something more intentional. Something that actually speaks to the local fashion scene instead of just following what’s happening elsewhere.

That’s really where Sol.Spec comes in.

We’re trying to bring fresh designs into both the eyewear space and the wider fashion conversation in South Africa. Pieces that feel considered, but still easy to wear. Something that adds to your look without overcomplicating it.

We also wanted to make sure it’s accessible.

Luxury shouldn’t feel distant or out of reach. It should be something you can actually enjoy in your day-to-day life. So everything we design is built around that balance, good quality, strong design, and a price point that makes sense.

But beyond the product, there’s something else that matters just as much to us: community.

Sol.Spec wasn’t only created for people who want to buy sunglasses. It was created for people who care about style, who have opinions, who enjoy sharing ideas and seeing how others put things together. We want this to be a space where people can connect, take inspiration, and be part of something that’s growing.

And as we grow, we also want to give back.

That’s why 2.5% of every sale goes towards charitable causes. It’s something we felt strongly about from the beginning, making sure that what we build has a positive impact beyond just fashion.

At the end of the day, Sol.Spec is about creating pieces that feel good to wear and easy to live in. Sunglasses that fit into your life, wherever you’re going and whatever you’re doing.
